Near the base of Skinner Butte and along the banks of the Willamette, the thirty varieties of roses at the Owen Rose Garden (300 N. Jefferson St., 541/682-4824, open daily) peak in June and bloom until fall. Along with 4,500 roses and magnolia blossoms in spring, tremendous old cherry and oak trees also command attention.
Getting to the Owen Rose Garden
To get here from I-5, take I-105 West and take the West Eugene off-ramp. Turn right at the bottom of the ramp onto Madison Street and follow it north toward the Willamette River. One block to your right is Jefferson Street and the entrance to the Rose Garden.
A more pleasant approach is on foot, via the riverside bike path behind the Valley River Inn (ask at the front desk for directions) until you get to the footbridge. On the other side of the river, loop back in the direction of the hotel for about 0.5 miles until you arrive at the rose garden.
