Two major areas of interest to visitors are immediately south of the Willamette River. The University of Oregon Campus campus, in Eugene’s southeast quadrant, and the downtown (bounded by 5th and 10th Avenues and Charnelton and High Streets) are only a five-minute drive from each other. Serious walkers can manage the two-mile distance without trouble.
Another excellent place to stroll, run, or bike with the locals, Alton Baker Park, is just across the river from downtown and the university.
The major north–south thoroughfare is Willamette Street, which can be followed from downtown five miles south to Eugene’s favorite hiking haunt, Spencer’s Butte.
