Hendricks Park

About two miles east of the U. of O. campus on a forested ridgeline is Hendricks Park (541/682-5324), home to 850 naturally occurring rhododendrons and azaleas and about 10,000 hybrids. The rhododendron gardens are in their glory during May, with 15–20-foot specimens in shades of pink, red, yellow, and purple. Even though the display declines by late June, it’s always a great place to stroll.

Gorgeous views of the city can be enjoyed from the west end of the garden, and tree-shaded footpaths lead to benches located in secluded cul-de-sacs on the hillside.

Getting to Hendricks Park

There are several ways to get to Hendricks Park, the easiest being to turn from Fairmount Boulevard onto Summit Drive. Or take Lane Transit Bus 27 for Fairmount, disembark at Summit Drive, and hike on up the hill 0.25 miles. Two parking lots accommodate cars—one near the picnic area of stoves and tables, the other at the upper entrance on Sunset Boulevard.
