Wavecrest Discoveries (P.O. Box 1795, Coos Bay 97420, 541/267-4027, http://wavecrestdiscoveries.com) offers a cornucopia of guided outdoor activities around the Bay Area and beyond, including clamming and tide pooling excursions, sea kayaking, dune and estuary tours, and more.

Surfing and Swimming

The best spot on the Oregon coast for swimming is Sunset Bay State Park. The water is warm enough for most adults and gentle enough for most kids.

Surfing is best just northeast of Sunset Bay, at Bastendorff Beach County Park (63379 Bastendorff Beach Rd., Charleston, 541/888-5353). The beach at Cape Arago can also be a good bet, although it requires a fairly steep downhill hike to get there.

Golf

There are two inexpensive public golf courses in the Bay Area: Sunset Bay Golf Course (11001 Cape Arago Hwy., Charleston, 541/888-9301, $18 weekends, $15 weekdays), a nine-holer close to Sunset Bay State Park, and the 18-hole Kentuck Golf Course (675 Golf Course Lane, North Bend, 541/756-4464, $28 for 18 holes, $25 weekdays), across the bay from North Bend along the Kentuck Inlet.
