Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (57744 Round Lake Dr., Bandon, 541/347-4380 or 888/345-6008, www.bandondunesgolf.com) has drawn accolades from the golf press and is far and away the most spectacular place to golf in Oregon. The original Bandon Dunes course has seven holes by the Pacific and unobstructed ocean views from all 18. Two other 18-hole courses, Pacific Dunes and Bandon Trails, give golfers a chance stay for a few days and keep encountering new territory.

To preserve the natural surroundings along the ocean bluffs, this Scottish links course doesn’t allow carts (the only amenity missing), so you’ll have to hire a caddie or schlep your own bag. A luxurious resort with Pacific views and a fine restaurant are also available for those who come to worship in the south coast’s Sistine Chapel of golf.

Golfers who have never played on the Oregon coast should come prepared for wind, especially in the afternoon. Oregon golfers, you may know about the wind, but we have a special piece of advice for you—dress up. This is a rather formal place, and you’ll feel out of place in your old baggy shorts and faded polo shirt.

The resort is one mile north of the Coquille River. May–October greens fees are $220 for hotel guests, $275 for nonguests; during the rest of the year, rates run $75–165. The caddie fee is $55 per bag.
