Ten-acre Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden (SE 28th Ave. and Woodstock Blvd.) is a colorful place April–June when some 600 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas, represented by about 2,500 individual specimens, are in bloom.
Trails wind through the gardens and along a spring-fed lake; a bridge leads to an island covered with yet more broad-leaved evergreens.
The floral display peaks in mid-May; strolling the gardens on Mother’s Day is a Portland tradition.
The rest of the year the Rhododendron Garden offer a quiet place for walking and contemplation, and bird-watching and fall foliage displays encourage an off-season visit. A $3 admission fee is charged 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Thursday–Monday March–Labor Day.
