The Eastside’s best Indian food comes from Bombay Cricket Club (1925 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 503/231-0740, http://bombaycricketclubrestaurant.com, 5–9 p.m. Sun.–Thurs., 5–10 p.m. Fri.–Sat., $15–20). This always-packed two-tiered restaurant offers superbly cooked traditional Indian dishes (and a few from the Middle East) with plenty of options for vegetarians.
Don’t come to Vindalho (2038 SE Clinton St., 503/467-4550, www.vindalho.com, 5–9 p.m. Sun.–Thurs., 5–10 p.m. Fri.–Sat., $14–21) looking for “authentic” Indian cooking. Instead, the chef has refined the sauces and spices of traditional Indian cooking and uses them to create a sophisticated hybrid cuisine that’s a delicious adjunct to Northwest-style cooking. The upscale dining room is stylish and full of energetic colors, and the outdoor courtyard is a great place for cocktails and samosas on a warm evening.
