A good, if rather standard, choice for families with kids, the Astoria outlet of Pig ’N Pancake (146 W. Bond St., 503/325-3144, 6 a.m.–9 p.m. Sun.–Thurs., 6 a.m.–10 p.m. Fri.–Sat., breakfast and lunch $7–10, dinner $10–18), a small north-coast chain (others are in Seaside and Cannon Beach), excels at big filling breakfasts at reasonable prices. The specialty is homemade pancakes and waffles, available in a dozen variations, including potato pancakes, Swedish pancakes (thin and crispy with lingonberries), pecan-filled pancakes, and, of course, pigs in a blanket.

Astoria’s old-timers flock to the decidedly unhip Ship Inn (1 2nd St., 503/325-0033, $10–24) for its waterfront views and its good fish-and-chips, with choices of halibut, cod, prawns, scallops, oysters, or a combo plate. The fish batter is light and not too greasy; aside from the fish, the Ship features English specialties such as bangers and mash and Cornish pasties.
