Built as a private Georgian-style residence in 1902, then converted to use as a convent in the 1950s, the elegant Rosebriar Hotel (636 14th St., 503/325-7427 or 800/482-0224, www.rosebriar.net, $100 and up) was renovated into a small comfortable hotel in the early 1990s. Set on a quiet neighborhood street a few blocks uphill from the Maritime Museum, the large bowfront windows of the parlor/lobby and many of the upstairs rooms command a sweeping view of the town and river below.

Original woodwork, tastefully understated decor and furnishings, private bathrooms, and cordial service make a stay here quite pleasant. Discounts are offered for extended stays; call or check the website for packages and other specials. A full breakfast is also included.

The Captain’s Suite includes a kitchenette, a large master bathroom, a soaking tub overlooking the Columbia, and a sitting room with a fireplace. The 1885 carriage-house cottage adjacent to the main hotel has its own kitchen plus a fireplace, a whirlpool tub, and a private patio, and it can accommodate well-behaved dogs. The Rosebriar is one of Astoria’s most popular lodgings, so it’s a good idea to reserve at least two weeks in advance during summer.

You can’t top the views at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites (204 W. Marine Dr., 503/325-6222 or 888/898-6222, www.astoriahie.com, $126 and up), directly under the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Guest rooms have a refrigerator, a microwave, a coffeemaker, a high-speed Internet connection, a TV, and a DVD player. Facilities include an indoor pool, a breakfast bar, a business center, and an exercise room. Pets are welcome.

A 15-minute drive west of Astoria, adjacent to the Fort Stevens Historic Area in quiet Hammond, the Officer’s Inn Bed-and-Breakfast (540 Russell Pl., Hammond, 503/861-2524 or 800/377-2524, www.officersinn.com, $110 and up) was built in 1905 and formerly housed Army officers and their families before the fort was decommissioned. A broad porch running the full length of the building overlooks the fort’s original parade grounds. The 8,000-square-foot inn offers nine guest units, all with private bathrooms and king- or queen-size beds; two-bedroom family suites each have a queen-size bed and two double beds.
