The arid hills around The Dalles are home to a number of vineyards, but only a couple of wineries have tasting rooms in town. Erin Glenn (710 E. 2nd St., 541/296-4707, www.eringlenn.com, noon–9 p.m. Fri., noon–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun.) has a number of burgundy- and Rhone-style wines, including a very stylish viognier; the winemaker also dabbles in dolcetto and tempranillo, unusual for this area.
The tasting room is in a historic 1864 structure that was meant to be part of a U.S. mint (as in printing money), but the local gold rush proved transient and the building has been put to other uses for nearly 150 years.
The tasting room has live music and light food service (fee charged) 6–9 p.m. Friday evenings.
