Buried Forest Overlook

An easy one-mile round trip leads to the Buried Forest Overlook, which provides a dramatic view of the White River Canyon, where a thick forest was buried during one of the mountain’s major eruptive periods 200–250 years ago.

Superheated gases blew down giant trees like matchsticks, and in the next instant everything was buried underneath a mixture of water, ash, and mud. The forces of wind and water erosion have since exposed the remains of the Buried Forest.

Getting to Buried Forest Overlook

To get to Buried Forest Overlook, follow one of the trails behind Timberline Lodge up the mountain about 0.25 miles until you reach the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. Turn east (right) onto the Pacific Crest Trail and follow it another 0.25 miles or so to the overlook.
