The Inn at Eagle Crest (1522 Cline Falls Rd., 541/923-2453 or 800/682-4786, www.eagle-crest.com, $100 and up), five miles west of Redmond, offers hotel rooms and one-bedroom suites in what is mostly a time-share operation. Rates are based on occupancy, so when occupancy is down in any season, rates may be lower. The terrain and vegetation are representative of the high desert, and the backdrop is views of eight Cascade peaks. Ask about ski and golf packages. This is a low-key family-oriented place.

In town, the Redmond Inn (1545 S. U.S. 97, 541/548-1091 or 800/833-3259, www.redmondinn.net, $65 and up) is a good value and a nice enough place to spend a night or two, with microwaves and fridges in the rooms and a pool. Pets are welcome for a small fee.

Rock climbers tend to camp, but when that gets old, the Hub Motel (1128 NW 6th St., 541/548-2101, www.thehubmotel.com, $45 and up) is inexpensive, close to Smith Rock, allows dogs, and has kitchenettes.
