Ride into the dunes with the folks from Sand Dunes Frontier (83960 U.S. 101, Florence, 541/997-3544, http://sanddunesfrontier.com). This company rents vehicles for travel in specially designated areas within the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.
Single-person dune buggies go for $45 per hour with a $100 deposit. You must be strapped in, wear a helmet, stay within the marked territory, and be especially careful going uphill. If you lose power on an incline, it’s possible to roll over when turning around to go back down.
Half-hour-long, 20-person dune buggy rides cost $12 for adults and $10 for children 4–11 years old. Protective goggles are provided, along with a driver.
Go in the morning when the sand tends to blow around less.
