Dune Mushers Mail Run

The Dune Mushers Mail Run, held in early March, is the world’s longest organized dry-land run for dogsled teams, which mush up the dunes from North Bend to Florence, a distance of over 70 miles, in two days. At the end of the run, the teams pass through Florence’s South Jetty area, to finish up with a parade through Old Town Florence.

Rhododendron Festival

During the third weekend of May, Florence celebrates the Rhododendron Festival coinciding with the blooming of these flowers, which proliferate in the area. It’s a tradition that goes back to 1908, when the festival was started as a way to draw attention and commerce to the area. A parade, carnival, flower show, 5K and 10K “Rhody Run,” and the crowning of Queen Rhododendra are highlights of the festivities. This is a very popular event, attracting more than 15,000 visitors each year.

Fourth of July

Fourth of July celebrations include live outdoor music and a barbecue in Old Town, and a fireworks display over the river.

Chowder, Brews, and Blues

Chowder, Brews, and Blues (541/997-1994, $6–10) in late September is a three-day event at the Florence Events Center honoring several things the community relishes. A coast-wide clam chowder contest is a highlight, along with live music and microbrew-tasting.
