Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga
The former turtle-processing plant at Mazunte lives on as the Mazunte Turtle Museum (on the main road, east end of the village, tel./fax 958/584-3376, 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Wed.–Sat., 10 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Sun.). At the museum, which includes an aquarium, study center, and turtle hatchery, you can peruse displays illustrating the ongoing turtle research and conservation program and see members of most of Mexico’s turtle species paddling in tanks overlooking the beach where their ancestors once swarmed.
Guided tours are offered in a number of foreign languages, including English, German, and Italian. For lots of good information, visit www.tomzap.com/turtle.html.
