Southwest of Minnewaska State Park, where Route 209 meets Route 52, is the village of Ellenville. Located at the western base of the Shawangunks, Ellenville has traditionally been known for its Jewish boardinghouses and megaresorts. Most of these are gone now, but still in town are many fine Colonial and Greek Revival buildings, and a few remaining kosher shops and restaurants.
Among them is Cohen’s Bakery (89 Center St., 845/647-7620), famed locally for its first-rate raisin-pumpernickel bread.
The Ellenville area also has a reputation for good hang-gliding. Mountain Wings Hang Gliding Center (150 Canal St., 845/647-3377, www.flightschool.net) rents equipment and offers introductory one-day hang-gliding courses.
