A good place for burgers and fries, sandwiches, and salads is Foster’s Coach House Tavern (22 Montgomery St., 845/876-8052, $9). Housed in an actual former coach house, Foster’s is filled with wacky horse paraphernalia, including horseshoes, a horse carriage that’s now a telephone booth, and mock horse stalls.

The China Rose (1 Shatzell Ave., two miles west of Rte. 9, 845/876-7442, $15) is an upscale Chinese restaurant known for its use of fresh ingredients and its peaceful outdoor patio overlooking the Hudson.

If you’re in the mood for Mediterranean or European cuisine, a couple of restaurants fit the bill. Lively, noisy Gigi Trattoria (6422 Montgomery St., 845/876-1007, $15), housed in what was once an automobile showroom, bills itself as “Hudson Valley Mediterranean.” On the menu are flatbread pizzas and lots of pasta dishes.

Le Petit Bistro (8 E. Market St., 845/876-7400, $18) is a classy yet casual bistro and bar with worn pine floors. The menu focuses on tasty French cuisine prepared with fresh local ingredients.

Traphagen (6387 Mill St., 845/876-1766, $21) at the Beekman Arms is partially in the historic inn and partially housed in a new greenhouse room filled with plants and flowers. The restaurant serves solid American fare with an emphasis on regional foods.
