An acclaimed opera festival takes place every July–August at the Glimmerglass Opera, Route 80, a partially open-air theater by Otsego Lake. The box office is downtown (18 Chestnut St., 607/547-2255, www.glimmerglass.org). Chamber-music concerts, lectures, and plays take place regularly in Hyde Hall (Glimmerglass State Park, 607/547-5098).

The basement Taproom at the Tunnicliff Inn (34–36 Pioneer St., 607/547-9860) is a favorite local late-night hangout. The tables are carved with the initials of Cooperstown pilgrims, and beers on tap start at just $1.50.

For an elegant evening out, step into the Templeton Lounge of the Otesaga (60 Lake St., 607/547-9931). Live music and dancing are often offered, starting at 9 p.m.
