One of the oldest museums in the United States, founded in 1791, the Albany Institute (125 Albany Ave., 518/463-4478, www.albanyinstitute.org, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Wed.–Sat., noon–5 p.m. Sun., adults $7, seniors and students $5, children 6–12 $3) is housed in an elegant beaux arts building and contains some wonderful gems, including many paintings by artists of the Hudson River School.
Early works of American portraiture are in the museum’s collection, along with Dutch ceramics, Albany-made silver, and New York–made furniture. Changing exhibits on the Hudson Valley and Capital District are also featured.
