Moravia

Well off the beaten track, this small village boasts a number of handsome 19th-century buildings and the 1820s St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church (14 Church St., 315/497-3747, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., tours by appointment). The sanctuary’s interior is covered with elaborate oak carvings designed and executed in Oberammergau, Germany.

Fillmore Glen State Park

Just south of the village of Moravia lies the 857-acre Fillmore Glen State Park (Rte. 38, 315/497-0130, dawn–dusk daily, $6–8 parking), centered on a deep and rugged ravine with five spectacular waterfalls. At the foot of the main falls is a geometric rock formation known as the Cowpens, and a popular swimming hole. Nearby await hiking trails, a campground, and a playground. For campground reservations, call 800/456-CAMP.

The park also contains a replica of the tiny log cabin in which President Millard Fillmore was born. His actual birthplace lies about five miles east of the park. Fillmore grew up dirt poor and went to work at an early age; he later described his upbringing as “completely shut out from the enterprises of civilization and advancement.”
