South of the Saratoga Race Course stretches the half-mile-long Saratoga Raceway, a foremost trotting track. Opened in 1941, the track features evening racing January–November with a short break in April. Some of the track’s top races take place during the thoroughbred meet.

In the old horseman’s building is the Saratoga Harness Hall of Fame (352 Jefferson St., off Nelson Ave., 518/587-4210, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Thurs.–Sat. June–Sept., call for off-season hours, free admission). On display are antique horseshoes, racing silks, high-wheel sulkies, and other memorabilia.

One exhibit honors Lady Suffolk, the “Old Grey Mare” of folk-song fame who raced in Saratoga in 1847, 16 years before thoroughbred racing began.
