New York is a large and extraordinarily diverse state, so to get the most out of your trip, it’s best to plan your itinerary carefully.
Most visitors will probably want to start their trip in New York City, and then head out to the Hamptons, the Hudson Valley, and the Catskills or the Adirondacks (also very accessible via Albany).
Visitors who wish to concentrate their time in the Finger Lakes or the Niagara/Erie Canal region could choose to start their trip in Rochester or Buffalo instead.
Many visitors come to New York City for its cultural, historical, and commercial attractions. Many come to upstate New York for its outdoors—beaches, forests, mountains, rivers, and lakes—as well as historic sites, relaxing hostelries, and picturesque villages.
A trip that combines a visit to both provides the best of two very different worlds.
