One of the newer museums in New York City is the Rubin Museum of Art (150 W. 17th St., near 7th Ave., 212/620-5000, www.rmanyc.org, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon. and Thurs., 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Wed., 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Fri., 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Sat.–Sun., adults $10, students and seniors $7, children under 12 free), this quiet, peaceful place is the only museum in the world dedicated to the art of the Himalayas.
Opened in 2004, the Rubin was founded by private collectors reluctant to donate their work to a larger institution that might bury it in their basement. In the museum’s stunning permanent collection are paintings, sculpture, textiles, and prints ranging in age from the 2nd to the 19th centuries, and in origin from Nepal to southern Siberia.
Housed in the former Barney’s department store, the museum also offers films, lectures, concerts, and dance events in its state-of-the-art auditorium.
