Manchester

If you’ve had your fill of maple syrup and cheddar cheese and could go for a hot latte and the New York Times crossword puzzle, then Manchester is your place. Vermont’s Madison Avenue in the Mountains, the winding path of Route 7 is lined with outlet shops bearing the names of top designers such as Coach, Escada, and Ralph Lauren. There’s more to the town than shopping, however. Its location between the Taconic Range and Green Mountains makes it the perfect jumping-off point for outdoor pursuits.

Manchester began taking shape as a resort community in the 1850s, when Franklin Orvis began touting the Equinox House as one of the most fashionable hotels in Vermont. Located at the base of Mount Equinox, the highest peak in the Taconics, the hotel and the town drew moneyed guests from New York and Massachusetts to hike, ski, and fly-fish for trout in the Batten Kill River. Thanks to Franklin’s brother Charles, the Orvis name is synonymous with fly-fishing, which is still avidly practiced in the area.
