The actual grounds of Fort Dummer are now underwater, flooded when a dam was built along the Connecticut River. The area around it, however, has been preserved as Fort Dummer State Park (517 Old Guilford Rd., 802/254-2610, www.vtstateparks.com/htm/fortdummer.cfm, mid-May–Labor Day, campsites $14–21), a 217-acre retreat that contains a mile and a half of gentle hiking trails through a densely wooded oak forest. The campground has 50 wooded tent sites and, as well as, 10 more secluded lean-tos to accommodate overnight camping.

Hikers and campers will also find plenty of trails at Ascutney State Park (1826 Back Mountain Rd., Windsor, 802/674-2060, www.vtstateparks.com/htm/ascutney.cfm, late May–mid-Oct., 49 campsites, $14–21 nightly). The park is known for its hawks and hang-gliders, both of which soar from the granite ledges of Mount Ascutney.
