Grafton

The gentle foothills of the Green Mountains hold a half dozen small villages tucked into their forested valleys. Red barns and trim white houses line the winding roads, often with brooks tracing alongside their paths.

The heart of this area is the village of Grafton, painstakingly preserved by a private foundation that owns much of the town. A walking tour of the village is a nice way to slow up an afternoon; guides can be picked up at the Old Tavern.

Grafton is also renowned for its cheese-making company, which, along with Cabot and Sugarbush farther north, has given the state its reputation for sharp and creamy cheddars.

The surrounding towns, meanwhile, have their own attractions: the immaculate town green in Newfane, a basketmaker and music festival in Putney, and the historic downtown of Bellows Falls.
