St. Johnsbury Athenaeum (1171 Main St., 802/748-8291, www.stjathenaeum.org, 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Mon.–Fri.; 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Sat., free) is just as much an art museum as a library, with dozens of fine canvases by American landscape and portrait painters. Highlights include the overpowering Domes of the Yosemite by Albert Bierstadt, and the enigmatic Raspberry Girl by Victorian-era realist Adolphe William Bouguereau.
The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum has been left in its original Victorian state, with black-walnut floors and walls.
