Housed in a stylishly converted old mill building and perched over the waters of Otter Creek Falls, Frog Hollow Craft Gallery (1 Mill St., 802/388-3177, www.froghollow.org, 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Mon.–Sat.; noon–5 p.m. Sun.) has made a profitable business of gathering arts and fine crafts from all over the region. Pick up delicate gourds-turned-holiday decorations, earthenware, hooked rugs, wood carvings, semiprecious jewelry, hand-carved furniture, and Vermont-made bath oils and hand creams.
If paying homage to the state’s favorite animal seems in order, do so at Holy Cow (44 Main St., 802/388-6737, www.woodyjacksonart.com), an art gallery dedicated entirely to said bovines. There, artist Woody Jackson sells his creative odes to livestock—in the form of cow glassware, mugs, notecards, and limited-reproduction prints of iconographic Holsteins, swimming in fields of fluorescent grass.
Only a college town would name a trendy clothing store after a Hermann Hesse novel; the Glass Bead Game (66 Main St., 802/388-6380) sells au courant designer denim (Sevens to Citizens of Humanity), plus shoes, tops, and jewelry.
Martha Stewart herself would feel right at home at Sweet Cecily (42 Main St., 802/388-3353), a collection of country knickknacks, bright hand-woven socks, Provençal-esque decor, and ceramics.
No less quaint is the Ben Franklin Store (63 Main St., 802/388-2101, www.benfranklinstores.com), a retro variety and toy store stashed with penny candy and aisles of educational playthings and crafts for kiddies.
Grooviness reigns at the hippie emporium that is Wild Mountain Thyme (48 Main St., 802/388-2580), where patchouli fills the nostrils and rack after rack of tie-dyed, flowing garments greets you.
