Few college campuses are as visually harmonious as Middlebury College (802/443-5000, www.middlebury.edu), consisting of a collection of granite and marble academic halls, capped with white spires and cupolas and arranged around a wide central quad. For a stroll around campus, park in the visitors’ lot behind the admissions office on South Main Street. Better yet, sign up for a student-led tour (10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Mon.–Fri. year-round; 10 a.m. Sat. Aug.–mid-Nov.).
A campus highlight, the Middlebury College Museum of Art (S. Main St./Rte. 30, 802/443-5007, www.middlebury.edu/arts/museum, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Fri.; noon–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun., free) is a Met in miniature, with terra-cotta Greek urns, Roman marble reliefs, Chinese ceramics, Japanese woodcuts, and European paintings—many of which are used in the college’s various art classes. Upstairs, a large open gallery displays changing exhibits of modern art and photography.
