A little slice of French country resides at Café Shelburne (5573 Shelburne Rd., 802/985-3939, www.cafeshelburne.com, 5:30–9 p.m. Tues.–Sat. Nov.–Aug.; also Sun. and Mon. Sept.–Oct.; $19–26), a lovely but low-key eatery with soft lighting, a well-chosen wine list, and an affable staff. Settle in for dinner and dig in to the Gallic menu, with specials such as delicately flavored quail salad and escargot with prosciutto and almonds.
Also French-leaning, also subtly romantic, is the
Bearded Frog (5247 Shelburne Rd., 802/985-9877, www.thebeardedfrog.com, 5–9 p.m. daily, $6–25), a restaurant named for owner Michel Mahe’s facial hair and French heritage. The spot has been a hit since it opened in spring of 2006, mostly thanks to Mahe’s eclectic menu—a pastiche of international flavors, such as mussels with chipotle, served to an enthusiastic crowd in the large, polished room against oversized windows and elegant palms.
