The rejuvenation of downtown Providence’s entertainment area has meant major renovations for spots like the beautiful Providence Performing Arts Center (240 Weybosset St., 401/421-2997, www.ppacri.org, box office 10 a.m.–5 p.m.), referred to locally as PPAC. A former Loews movie theater built in the 1920s, the gilded interior sports intricate plasterwork, marble columns, and huge crystal chandeliers.

The current state-of-the-art sound system is perfect for blasting the music of the Broadway shows that are hosted here, from My Fair Lady and The Lion King to The Nutcracker.
