With an utter lack of formality, Spike’s Junkyard Dog (485 Branch Ave., 401/861-6888, 11 a.m.–11 p.m. Mon.–Thu.; 11 a.m.–1:30 a.m. Fri.–Sat.; noon–10 p.m. Sun., www.spikesjunkyarddogs.com, $1.50–4.75) is a funky, junky temple to the hot dog—from “Samurai Dogs” (with teriyaki sauce) to tofu wieners.
Chomp into the best burgers in the city at Café Paragon (234 Thayer St., 401/331-6200, www.paragonandviva.com, 11 a.m.–1 a.m. Mon.–Thu.; 11 a.m.–2 a.m. Fri.–Sat.; 10 a.m.–1 a.m. Sun., $6–20) a stylish eatery on Thayer Street near Brown University that serves up gourmet black angus beef patties topped with Cajun onion strips, blue cheese-and-bacon and other mouthwatering combinations. The restaurant also has a full menu of entrées, pizza, tapas, and sushi—but for the prices, none of it holds up to the quality of the burgers. Next door, Viva lounge serves stiff cocktails with DJ music at night.
