Even if Woonsocket had no other attractions, it’s almost worth a visit to stay in the very reasonably priced, extremely charming Pillsbury House B&B (341 Prospect St., Woonsocket, 401/766-7983, www.pillsburyhouse.com, $95–135). The 19th-century house, situated close to the downtown area’s shops and restaurants, is an elegant ode to the town’s history, with its period antiques, tasteful rooms, and hospitable service.

True river rats don’t have to leave the water at day’s end—at least not if they opt to sleep in the Samuel Slater Canal Boat B&B (175 Main St., Pawtucket, 401/724-2200, www.bedandbreakfastblackstone.com, $130–180).
