There are plenty of opportunities for mountain biking in the White Mountain National Forest (603/447-5448, www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/white_mountain). One of the best is the Cherry Mountain Loop, 25 miles of roller-coaster backwoods trails in the Crawford Notch area. The route takes in three waterfalls and heavily wooded paths crisscrossed with logging roads. The trailhead starts on Route 302, three miles east of Twin Mountain. (Note, however, that it’s not actually a loop due to some impassable trails on Mount Mitten.)
For family biking, check out the Great Glen Outdoors Center (Mt. Washington Auto Rd., Rte. 16, Pinkham Notch, 603/466-2333, www.greatglentrails.com) outside Pinkham Notch. This center makes the work easy by grooming the trails to within an inch of their lives—removing any debris or surface hazards that could catch up your wheels. For some that might mean no fun; for others, that’s where the fun begins. In the winter, the center grooms its trails for cross-country skiing.
