One of the more unusual events of the White Mountains, the Rubber Ducky Regatta (603/745-6621, www.lincolnwoodstock.com, early Sept.) allows kids (and grown-ups) to adopt a duck for five bucks then throw it into the Pemigewassett to race against its yellow rubber brethren. Prizes in past years have included a kayak, a mountain bike, and $150 for the best duck name.
Sometimes the rugged peaks of the Whites resemble the Highlands of Scotland; at no time, in fact, more than during the Highland Games (Loon Mountain, 603/229-1975, www.nhscot.com, Sept.), in which kilted pipers and athletes from 60 different clans battle it out in games of skill. It’s the largest annual Scottish gathering in the Northeast.
