When you tire of the mountains, the picturesque downtown of Littleton makes for a charming return to civilization. Pick up a self-guided walking tour brochure at the local Chamber of Commerce office (111 Main St., 603/444-6561, www.littletonareachamber.com) with information on twenty-some 19th-century buildings.
Among them is the Littleton Grist Mill (18 Mill St., Littleton, 603/444-7478, www.littletongristmill.com, 10:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Wed.–Sat.; 10:30 a.m.–3 p.m. Sun., free), a 1798 water-powered mill that once ground corn and flour and served as the economic powerhouse that built the community. The mill was meticulously restored to working order using authentic materials; however, current regulations on water releases from the dam upstream make it unable to operate.
No matter, the mill is currently open for tours of the milling process, while another 19th-century mill does produce flour from organic grains on-site for purchase in the gift shop.
