Live music on weekends and a lively crowd on weeknights makes Elm City Brew Pub (222 West St., 603/355-3335) the place to be. The homemade brews are an added attraction.
During the school year, the Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College (229 Main St., 603/358-2168) puts on dramatic and comedic productions.
Started in 1991, the Keene Pumpkin Festival (603/358-5344, www.pumpkinfestival.com, late Oct.) set the world record in number of lit jack-o’-lanterns, displaying 1,628 its first year. Every year since, the town has tried to beat the record, with the current record standing at close to 30,000 in 2003. (That record stood as Guinness’s greatest until 2006, when Boston spoiled the fun with a one-off show of one-upsmanship by lighting 30,100 pumpkins on Boston Common.) Needless to say, the sight of so many carved and glowing gourds is quite a thing to behold.
