Few towns in New England can match the picturesque beauty of Hillsborough, a self-contained village of colonial homes, many of them still owned by the descendents of the people who built them. The village has been invigorated by various artisans who have set up shop downtown, including the acclaimed Gibson’s Pewter, one of the top pewter producers still in existence.
Its downtown area, known as “Hillsborough Bridge,” is also known for its small population of residents descended from German settlers; a delicious German bakery and annual Schnitzelfest attest to their ongoing influence. The area around Hillsborough is mainly farmland, dotted with equally picturesque villages and forested hillsides that light up with colorful foliage in autumn.
