Sculptured Rocks
One of the more unusual terrain features in New Hampshire, the twisted moonscape known as the Sculptured Rocks (between Rtes. 3A & 118, Groton, 603/271-3556, www.nhstateparks.org) resulted at the end of the last ice age when rushing ice water whipped tiny grains of sand through a bedrock canyon to drill curious rounded shapes into the rock. Now situated on state park land, the natural baths make popular swimming holes.
Minot-Sleeper Library
Known for the fine quality of its sand, the little town of Bristol was once a major manufacturing center for brick and pottery. Its downtown now makes for a scenic stroll. Of particular note is the Gothic brick Minot-Sleeper Library (35 Pleasant St., Bristol, 603/744-3352, www.townofbristolnh.org). Behind the library is a butterfly garden with contemplative benches and succulent flowers calculated to tempt butterflies looking for a snack.
