A few miles east of Squam Lake, the Castle in the Clouds (455 Old Mountain Rd./Rte. 171, Moultonborough, 603/476-5900, www.castleintheclouds.org, 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. late May–mid-Oct., $12 adults, $9 seniors, $5 youth 7–14, free children 6 and under) is housed in a stone arts and crafts cottage perched romantically above the surrounding lakes atop the Ossipee Mountain Range.
Named Lucknow when it was built in 1914, is stone arts and crafts cottage was the brainchild of Thomas Plant, an eccentric shoe company magnate with a love for the outdoors. Tours of the home include the brilliant art deco furnishings as well as the outdoor gardens. If you’d rather just admire the view, you can take a scenic drive around the property and enjoy the grounds for $5 a person.
