The natural, quiet beauty of the tiny towns surrounding Big Squam Lake ooze with such quintessential New England cuteness that Hollywood decided they were the perfect place to film On Golden Pond back in 1981. Visitors to the area feel that same sense of serenity, and often come back year after year to towns like Ashland, Holderness, and Moultonborough—each blessed with all the recreation of Winnipesaukee, but none of the noise or crowds.
Squam is actually two spring-fed lakes connected by a channel in Holderness: Little Squam is only two miles long to Big Squam’s six. Between the two of them, they’re home to 67 islands, not to mention miles of beaches and unspoiled forest.
