Yankee Candle Flagship Store
Like the world’s largest ball of twine, the Yankee Candle Flagship Store (25 Greenfield Rd., S. Deerfield, 877/636-7707, www.yankeecandle.com, 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m. daily Jan.–Jul; free) grew from humble beginnings into a tourist trap of epic proportions. At its center is a warehouse-sized candle store, an alphabetized assault on the nostrils from apple cider to white zinfandel. That is just the beginning, however, of a complex that includes countless home-goods stores, a candle-making museum, and even a Bavarian Christmas village complete with model trains and gondolas.
Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory
Even on the coldest days, the Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory (281 Greenfield Rd., S. Deerfield, 413/665-2805, www.magicwings.com, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Memorial Day–Labor Day; 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Sept.–May, $12 adults, $10 seniors, $8 children 3–17, free children under 3) is a doorway into a tropical vacation, with walkways through lush vegetation and 3,000 butterflies of all shapes and colors flitting past. “Flight attendants” are available to help identify species.
