When Henry Flynt took his son to Deerfield Academy in the 1930s, he was amazed to see how well-preserved the center of the town of Deerfield was. Over the years, he set about buying and restoring the old homes and putting them into a trust.
The result today is an open-air museum (84B Old Main St., 413/774-5581, www.historic-deerfield.org, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. daily Apr.–Nov., $12 adults, $5 youth 6–17, free children under 6) that provides one of the best introductions to early New England history.
Thirteen houses built between 1730 and 1850 contain 25,000 antique items from around New England, while museum exhibits tell the story of the early settlers of the area. Innovative hands-on history classes allow you to learn skills from sheep-shearing to open-hearth cooking.
