Mead Art Museum
For such a small museum, Amherst College’s Mead Art Museum (Amherst College, 413/542-2335, www.amherst.edu, 9 a.m.–midnight Tues.–Thurs. and Sun. and 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Fri.–Sat. Sept.–May; 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Sun. June–July, free) has a first-rate collection of American and European art.
Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art
A more unusual museum is the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (125 West Bay Rd., 413/658-1100, www.picturebookart.org, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Fri.; 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sat.; 12–5 p.m. Sun., $9 adults, $6 seniors, students, youth under 18), which features work by the local creator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other beloved children’s books.
Yiddish Book Center
On the nearby campus of Hampshire College, the Yiddish Book Center (1021 West St., 413/256-4900, www.yiddishbookcenter.org, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon.–Fri.; 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Sun., free) tells the history of this little-known subculture.
