In addition to its art exhibits, MassMoCA (Fri.–Sat. year-round, free–$30) serves as the cultural center of the community, staging silent movies accompanied by a string quartet, cutting-edge dance performances, and avant-garde musical performances by the likes of Yo La Tengo and Laurie Anderson.

In the nearby town of Adams, a Greek musician and a New York choreographer recently opened Stone Soup Cafe (27A Park St., 413/743-9600, www.topiaarts.org, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., Tue.–Sun., 6–11 p.m. Fri.–Sat.), an “art bar” with graceful nudes painted on the walls and wine tastings, music, and “aerial dance” on the schedule. The owners’ eventual plan is to renovate a dormant 80,000-square-foot theater space behind the bar to offer concerts and avant-garde theater performances.
