In addition to being known as the “Diner Capital of the World,” Worcester has other eateries worth checking out. An enthusiastic favorite among locals, O’Connor’s Restaurant & Bar (1160 W. Boylston St., 508/853-0789, www.oconnorsrestaurant.com, 11:30 a.m.–11 p.m. Mon.–Sat.; 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m. Sun., $11–21)is a family-style Irish restaurant that draws a cross-section of city residents. The maze of dining rooms is covered floor-to-ceiling with Irish beer and liquor advertisements. The menu includes authentic Auld Sod dishes like shepherd’s pie and bangers ’n’ mash.
The upper crust from around Central Massachusetts converges on 111 Chop House (111 Shrewsbury St., 508/799-4111, www.111chophouse.com, 4 p.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Thurs.; 4 p.m.–11 p.m. Fri.–Sat.; 4 p.m.–9:30 p.m. Sun., $19–36) for high-quality steaks and other meat dishes such as Dijon-encrusted rack of lamb. The swank dining room is a welcome change for Worcester; a cheaper tapas-and-pizza menu is served at the bar.
