In addition to the usual curries and Tandoori dishes, the fine Indian restaurant Khushboo (1709 Massachusetts Ave., 781/863-2900, www.khushboorestaurant.com, $13–16) has some more unusual offerings on the menu, including South Indian dosas, pan-roasted shrimp curry, and many vegetarian selections like Punjabi black lentils.
Hearty (but not heavy) Italian takes center stage at Mario’s (1733 Massachusetts Ave., 781/861-1182, $17–24), known most for its rich pastas and jovial atmosphere. Note: Arrive early at lunchtime—the place fills up quickly for its daily specials.
Also in the successful Italian category is Bertucci’s (1777 Massachusetts Ave., 781/860-9000, www.bertuccis.com, $15–21), a brick-oven-pizza joint that began in Massachusetts and can now be found around the country. Ask for extra rolls, you won’t be sorry.
Meanwhile, the menu at nearby
Catch (34 Church St., Winchester, 781/729-1040, www.catchrestaurant.com, $21–28) is far from “the usual.” The cushy bistro wows diners nightly with presentation of salt-roasted Wellfleet clams and grilled lemon, scallops with celery root and roasted pineapple, and oysters with yuzu sauce.
