Sandwich Glass Museum
In the 19th century, entrepreneur Deming Jarves opened a glass factory in Sandwich, importing sand from Florida when the local stuff wouldn’t work. His output is on display at the Sandwich Glass Museum (129 Main St., Sandwich, 508/888-0251, www.sandwichglassmuseum.org, 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. daily Apr.–Dec.; closed Jan.; 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Wed.–Sun. Feb.–Mar., $5 adults, $1.25 children 6–14, free children 6 and under), a fascinating tour through the history and techniques of the art, including glassblowing demonstrations using a 2,000-degree furnace.
Woods Hole Science Aquarium
The modest Woods Hole Science Aquarium (166 Water St., Woods Hole, 508/495-2001, http://aquarium.nefsc.noaa.gov, 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Sat. June–Aug.; 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon.–Fri. Sept.–May, free) makes a good activity for kids and rainy days, complete with a seal pool and “touch tanks” where you can pick up crabs and other critters.
