When he was a child, pharmaceutical giant J. K. Lilly collected ticket stubs and coins; as he grew older, fascination became an addiction, leading to collections of classic cars and folk art.

Now more than 200 years of American history are breathlessly encapsulated in the 100-acre Heritage Museums & Gardens (67 Grove St., Sandwich, 508/888-3300, www.heritagemuseumsandgardens.org, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. daily Apr.–Oct, $12 adults, $11 seniors, $6 children 4–16, free children under 4), Lilly’s former estate.

Various exhibits include an antique-car museum, a windmill, a carousel, and the Hall of Fame for the Cape Cod Baseball League. If that isn’t enough, the grounds are filled with bed after bed of hybrid flowers created by the estate’s previous owner.
