Lighthouses

Provincetown has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to lighthouses, with three real lookers. Only Race Point Light (Race Point Beach, Rte. 6, 508/487-9930, www.racepointlighthouse.net) is easily accessible. The 45-foot tower was built in 1876 and is open for tours on some Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The adjoining keeper’s house is also a summer bed-and-breakfast ($145–185) with the most dramatic location on the Cape.

The other two beacons—Wood End Light and Long Point Light—stand sentinel on the bay side of Provincetown’s curving claw. You can hike to Wood End across the breakwater at the west end of town, and from there walk the coast to Long Point. For an easier trip, take a shuttle from Flyer’s Boatyard (131A Commercial St., 508/487-0898, www.flyersrentals.com, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. daily, $8 one-way, $12 round-trip), which also runs a pink party boat for sunset cruises.
